I don’t know the answer. But I think it has something to do with self-expression, pushing creative limits, not being afraid of failing or being misunderstood, and curiosity.

When many people hear of Welch, they think “extraordinary business leader, ruthless business titan, and someone who had it all…” but there is always two sides to the coin.
An example of how good intentions (giving each of his kids GE stock) resulted in a poor outcome (according to Welch).
